"Miracle colourist; hand-painting each strand of hair individually"
New York Magazine, 2013
Background
Chelsey Pickthorn first began her career in Portland, Oregon, before relocating to Qatar to continue her work in hair colour and shaping, and eventually ending up in Manhattan. In New York City, Chelsey started as the first person to work side-by-side with innovative stylist Laurie Foley, then as first assist to stylist Orlando Pita, as well as a colourist at his upscale salon, eventually going on to open her own studio, Pickthorn salon. Chelsey has done colour and style for Tom Ford and Michael Kors campaigns, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and has assisted on campaigns and shoots for Gucci, Redkin, Burberry, Dior, and more, including notable photographers, publications, and fashion shows.
Vision
Including the use of a straight blade in hair shaping and the rejection of the "foil" methods that are traditionally used for hair colour processes, Chelsey's techniques are catered to her unique vision, which values the hair's condition as well as physical appearance. Pickthorn is inspired by natural highlights, organic tones in nature, and pure colours, sometimes mixing up to twenty shades to reach the ideal hue. Chelsey strives to build a relationship with each person's hair, delivering tones that maintain the hair's integrity, and shape/style sessions that look forward to the hair's long-term growth.
